Dr. Bill Blokker, Ed.D., passed away peacefully on August 11, 2025, at his home in Kirkland, Washington, surrounded by his loving family and friends, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born on April 19, 1943, in Buffalo, New York, Bill dedicated his life to education, leadership, and helping others reach their full potential. Over the course of his distinguished career, he served as a teacher, principal, and district-level administrator before becoming a successful entrepreneur, nationally recognized speaker, and best-selling author.

Bill’s unwavering belief that every child can learn to read led him to establish Literacy First, an organization that has helped hundreds of thousands of children unlock the power of reading. His passion for empowering others also inspired him to write Achieving Beyond Expectations, published in 2020, which continues to motivate leaders and learners alike.

Everything Bill did—from his work in education to his personal relationships—was rooted in his desire to help others grow, lead, and thrive. His words, actions, and enduring optimism inspired countless individuals to exceed their own expectations.

Bill is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Sue Blokker; his sons, Kevin (Jeannie Blokker) of Doylestown, PA, and Scott (Shaun Blokker) of Mesa, AZ; his grandchildren, Griffin, Janelle, Silas, and Sander; and his brother, Carl Blokker (Nancy Blokker) of Rochester, NY.

Bill will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his legacy of service, wisdom, and encouragement will continue to live on in the many lives he touched.

In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to honor Bill’s memory with a donation to in support of cancer research and patient care.
