Mark Styner

Mark died peacefully at Evergreen Hospice Center after months of declining health due to a rare autoimmune condition. He grew up in Bellevue, WA, the youngest of Stan & Lorraine Styner’s 3 children, and had great memories of time with friends in their Lochmoor neighborhood. Sports were a big part of his life, starting with youth basketball, soccer & baseball, later adding football and track at Odle Middle School & Interlake High School (class of ’77). After high school, tennis became a big part of his life for several years, playing & teaching at every opportunity.

In his 20s, Mark spent several years living in Orange County, CA working for Nordstrom. He enjoyed being near the beach for windsurfing, along with being able to ski at Mammoth & Big Bear. Then, in the late 80s Mark was drawn back to the Seattle area to be closer to family, and this is when he met his wife, Deb. They married in 1991 and made their home in Kirkland.

During this time Mark worked in financial services for many years, and especially enjoyed the years of business travel that gave him the opportunity to see new cities and host golf events for business associates.

In 2005 Mark & Deb were overjoyed when their son Ian was born, and Mark took on the big job of stay-at-home Dad. Once Ian reached school age, he was excited to become more involved with sports again, coaching and helping with many of Ian’s basketball, baseball & soccer teams.  He loved our local youth sports community, and the last few years was excited to coach middle school sports, where he enthusiastically took on coaching boys & girls’ basketball, plus soccer & track. These coaching experiences are what he missed most during these past couple years of the Covid pandemic.

Besides sports, another continuous love was time spent at the family beach house on the Washinton coast in Tokeland, WA. Mark had lifelong memories from childhood with his grandparents and cousins, and later years with siblings and their families, including late sister-in-law, Janet, niece, nephews and friends. He was thankful to have had the opportunity to share the magic of Tokeland with Ian.

Mark is survived by his wife of over 30 years, Debra; son Ian; sister Susan Savage (Bill); brother Jon Styner (Ellen Everingham); nieces Lisanne Olsen, Ava & Adison Gordon; nephews Patrick Fogarty, Eric & Evan Styner; and in-laws John E & Jeanne Gordon, John G. & Jodie Gordon.

The family suggests any remembrances in Mark’s name to your favorite youth sports organization, or Benaroya Research Institute of Virginia Mason (for Autoimmunity Research.)  There will be a Celebration of Life at McMenamins Anderson School on May 22nd at 1pm.
