Lynwood Stephen Smith

Lynwood was born in Snohomish, Washington, November 15, 1928 to Stephen and Erna Smith and passed away on July 30, 2021.  He is survived by Betty, his wife of 69 years, his three children, Becky (Brian), Peggy and Paul (Martha), four grandchildren, Katie, Jenny, Colleen and Sarah, and one great grandchild, Kaylee.

Lynwood was a teacher in zoology throughout his working life, starting in Chehalis High School, moving to Bremerton Community College and, once he had attained his PhD, at the University of Victoria and then the University of Washington.  His specialty was physiology, spending many years working in Fisheries at UW.  This career gave him the opportunity to travel to Chile and Ambon, Indonesia where he set up Fisheries programs in rural universities.

Outside of his family, he had multiple passions; flying small planes, designing and building small boats, playing the accordion & theater organ, and wood carving.  There always seemed to be a boat under construction in the basement, from a trimaran to a Haida-style canoe.  And he was always trying to design the perfect rowing boat.

We will miss him very much!

A memorial will be held at the family beach house, Tulare Beach, 11628 Tulare Way, Marysville (on the Tulalip Reservation), September 11, 12:30-2:30.  Lunch available.  Parking available at the house, but if full, the area around the boat ramp has been reserved for attendees.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate a donation in our father’s honor to Sound Experience in support of their youth environmental education and maritime programs aboard the schooner Adventuress. Lynwood loved teaching his students, friends and family about the marine environment, was an avid wooden boat enthusiast and supporter of the nonprofit.
