Jay William Hintz
Jay was born in Forks, Washington to Jane Devitt Hintz and J. William Hintz. They lived in various locations in the northern Olympic Peninsula until moving to Seattle, Washington in 1963. There he attended middle school, graduated from Garfield High School, and attended community college.
In 1968 he was drafted into the Army and served in Vietnam. These were topics he declined to speak about. He did, however, find Asian people and their culture captivating.
Jay sought and found beauty in nature. From a young age he enjoyed photography, drawing and painting. It was this drive to create that led him to attend Cornish School of Fine Art. There he was free to explore a variety of media and styles. This guidance led him to develop his distinct style of sketching Seattle scenes and painting with oils, acrylics, and watercolors.
He enjoyed woodworking and inventing “Low-Tech Tub Toys” powered by balloons and rubber bands. These he sold at the Pike Place Market for many years, where he felt at home in the company of other artists. He eventually moved to the International District and lived there for many years, making numerous friends, and studying painting with a Chinese master.
Jay was preceded in death by his mother and father. He is survived by his three sisters, Diane Hintz, Julie Hintz, and Linda Hintz Burns who gave him many nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind many friends, including his special friends, Nhung Le and her son, Abraham.
There will be a private memorial service with his family in the spring. Jay added beauty to this life we live. He will be greatly missed and remembered with deep love.
