James Daniel Carroll

James Daniel Carroll, affectionately known by many names — Dan, Danny, Jim, Jimmy, and most importantly, Dad — passed away on February 25, 2025, at his home in Bothell, Washington. He was 73 years old.

Born on November 26, 1951, in Brockville, Ontario, Canada, James spent his early years catching fish and playing with his beloved beagles alongside the banks of the St. Lawrence River with his brother Thomas, sister Patricia, and parents Thomas and Mary Carroll. He began his education at St. Lawrence River Elementary School and later moved to Sheboygan, Wisconsin, where he graduated from North High School. He continued his studies at Sheridan College in Brampton, Ontario, earning a degree in Business. Soon thereafter, he relocated to the United States to further his career, start a family, and find his permanent home in the Pacific Northwest.

James built a long and respected career in the insurance industry, steadily rising to become an Executive Underwriter. He insured multiple iconic buildings across the Seattle skyline, always pointing them out with pride. Known for his intelligence and reliability, he excelled professionally and found fulfillment in mentoring colleagues throughout his career.

James had many interests and a deep curiosity about the world around him. He had a lifelong passion for reading and was especially drawn to theology, philosophy, and civics. In his home, every room had at least one bookcase, organized by topic, with more stacks in progress nearby. As a father, he spent time coaching his daughter’s soccer team, playing games, listening to music, watching sports, and discussing the topics he was most passionate about. He loved animals, especially his beagles, which he carried throughout his life.

Those who knew James remember him as humorous and quick-witted. He was both silly and fun-spirited but also profoundly complex and thoughtful. Athletic in his youth and sharp-minded throughout his life, James left an impression that was both unique and enduring.

He is lovingly remembered by his daughters, Shannon Carroll and Jessica Williams, sister Patricia Rellatz and husband Ronald Rellatz, brother Thomas Carroll and wife Tina Carroll, and nephews James Carroll and Thomas Cassidy. He was predeceased by Linda Carroll, his former spouse, friend, and loving mother to his daughters.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association.

“Birth and death are only a door through which we go in and out. Birth and death are only a game of hide-and-seek. So smile to me and take my hand and wave good-bye. Tomorrow we shall meet again or even before. We shall always be meeting again at the true source, always meeting again on the myriad paths of life.” ―
