Former Brightwood resident Georgia Charlotte Baylis died Wednesday, March 14, at her daughter’s home in Kenmore, Wash., surrounded by family. She was 87.
A celebration of life service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 14, The Church on The Mountain, 68211 E. Highway 26, Welches, followed by a luncheon. A private family burial will be at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.
Georgia was born Aug. 6, 1924, in Portland to George and Florence (Sitkus) Edwards. After graduating from Hudson Bay Union High School in Vancouver, Wash., Georgia moved to Portland during World War II to work in the shipyards as a keypunch operator.
In 1953, Georgia married Roy Baylis. They resided in Boring before moving to Brightwood in 1968. Georgia worked as a secretary in the late 1970s. She worked for Portland State University until retiring in 1990.
Georgia attended The Chapel of the Hills, and she was involved in many Bible study groups on the mountain. After retirement, she volunteered for many causes, such as for the Hoodland Senior Center as a driver and for the Brightwood Water Works as a bookkeeper. She sang with the Joyful Noise Kitchen Band, which performed at senior centers in the Portland area. She donated much of her time until a major illness overtook her in 2010.
Georgia loved spending time with family and friends. She enjoyed travel as well as gardening, sewing, singing, cooking and playing games.
She was preceded in death by her husband; grandson, Matthew Baylis; and sisters, Violet and Ermine Mae.
Survivors include her children, Kathy Hanvey of Kenmore, Jim Smith of Springfield, Tracy Baylis of Brightwood and Dave Baylis of Brightwood; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
