It’s with sadness that we note the passing of 100-year-old Genevieve Tuck, 1995 Snohomish County Artist of the Year. Since she first picked up a paintbrush and pencil at the age of six, she had been drawing and painting, evolving a style of bold color and texture reminiscent of Cezanne. Her work has been exhibited at the Arts Council of Snohomish County Gallery, the Western Art Association’s annual national art show and auction, the Washington State Capitol, the Frye Art Museum in Seattle, and at the Edmonds Art Festival.
Genevieve received a B.A. in art from the University of Washington in 1929, studying under Walter Isaacs and other masters. Into her 90s she painted in all weather conditions, and painted on location everywhere from Hawaii to Spain’s Costa del Sol. This year, more than 260 people attended her 100th birthday celebration at Snohomish United Methodist Church, and The (Everett) Herald and the Seattle P-I noted her remarkable life and career.
Living in Monroe at The Old Cider Mill, Genevieve also painted thousands of scenes of Snohomish County. She said she wanted to capture the sights of rural life before it disappeared, sights she wanted her five children and her many grand and great grandchildren to know.
