Eugenio Cano

Eugenio H. Cano or Howdy, as he was known to his family, was born to Manuel and Delia Cano in Lima, Peru on December 13, 1933. After a 5-year long and valiant battle with cancer, he peacefully left this world to be with God on Christmas morning, December 25, 2022. He was 89 years old.

Howdy was a young man in his 30’s when he emigrated from Peru to the United States with his sister Lillian and settled in the Capital Hill area of Seattle, WA. He had a series of odd and difficult jobs and did his best to go to school taking some technical and English courses. After meeting Carol Hess (a mother of three boys; Monty, Jay, and Michael), they married and moved to the Wallingford neighborhood of Seattle where they welcomed a daughter and son. The couple eventually divorced and Howdy soon found himself as a single father of two.

Howdy worked as a painter for his cousin until one day, he went to a painting work party at an Italian family home and quickly noticed most everyone was eating and drinking more than working. He started working quietly and efficiently and caught the attention of the family head who was also the owner operator of a construction/cabinet shop. He was offered a job at the party and showed up to work Monday morning. Howdy, who from then on would be called “Geno” by his new employer and co-workers, loyally worked for A. Bouno Construction & Cabinet Shop until retirement after 30 years of service.

Geno was proud of his Peruvian heritage and was a great cook, always making his family’s favorites like ceviche, sudado, tamales, and papas al orno. Geno was a stern and discipline heavy father, but he also had an infectious smile and a kind twinkle in his eye. He was known for his banter, quick wit and great laugh by his many friends at his favorite watering holes. He loved to play and watch soccer, loved music and dancing, playing pool, a good drink, he loved to cook, but most of all he loved his family.

He is preceded in death by his parents Delia and Manuel, nephew Michel, sister and brother-in-law Nancy and Marcel, granddaughter Neriah, brother Freddy, nephew Willie, and grand dog Lola.

He is survived by his daughter Veronica Cano and his son, Eugenio Cano and by his extended family Lillian and Mark Hopkins, Amy and Matt Scott, Hailey Scott, Landon Scott, Terry and Guillermo Diaz, Tony Diaz and Brian Bullock, Pierre Tanguy and Anthony Tanguy.

Howdy’s soul is at peace now, free from medicine, doctors’ appointments, suffering or pain. He will be interred at Holy Rood Cemetery alongside his mother Delia, his brother Freddy, sister and brother-in-law Nancy and Marcel and nephew Willy.

We will love you forever Papa, now rest well with the Lord.
