Elizabeth Kohl Hendrickson
Elizabeth (Betty) Kohl Hendrickson (née Kohl) was born in Eau Clare, Wisconsin, on June 22, 1938.
She was her high school valedictorian, a chemistry major at Pomona College (Claremont, California) who won a prestigious National Science Foundation fellowship for her first year in graduate school at the University of Illinois.
Betty was the mother of three children. A daughter, Klara Hendrickson, passed away too early in a car/bicycle accident at age twenty.
When her children were in high school, Betty returned to chemistry as a research collaborator with her husband Stewart Hendrickson, a chemistry professor at St. Olaf College (Northfield, Minnesota). After she and her husband retired from St Olaf in 1996, they moved to Seattle where they did research for several more years in the Chemistry Department at the University of Washington. They published about twenty research papers together. Her interests outside of science ranged from gardening, photography, sewing, stamp collecting, genealogy, to music. She learned to play the hammered dulcimer at age 61, and performed with other musicians.
Betty developed dementia in the Fall of 2019 and was placed in a home for memory care. After eighteen months, she succumbed to her disease and passed away peacefully at age 82 on June 9, 2021 in a loving adult family home under hospice care in Seattle. At her side were her daughter Krista McKeague (Fairfax, California), her son Matthew Hendrickson (Seattle), and her husband Stewart Hendrickson (Seattle).
Betty and Stewart were married for 61 years. They met at Pomona College where they were both chemistry majors
