Carolyn “Jean” (Troyer) ( DeRider) Dike (94) was born July 25, 1928, in Whitewood, S. D. to Caroline and Antone Troyer.  Jean passed peacefully on February 2, 2023, at the age of 94.

She was the eldest of 8 children and grew up on the family farm, going to the local farm school through 8th grade and then moved to Lead, S.D.  where she attended and graduated High School in 1946.

Jean met and married her high-school sweetheart Robert “Bob” DeRider in 1952.

They both worked at the Pioneer Transfer in Deadwood, S.D. and also operated the concession at Terry Peak Ski Area for a number of years.   Jean tragically became  a widow in 1965 when her husband Bob drowned in a boating accident.

She became a single mom to 2 children and eventually remarried and moved to Washington State.  She spent much of her life as a bookkeeper and owned a number of businesses including a Gas station and mini-mart in Mead, WA. and then a Resort operation at Priest Lake in Coolin, ID.

Jean was an avid snow and water skier in her younger years and also enjoyed bowling.  Later in life, she enjoyed playing BINGO and visiting with her family.

She is survived by 2 sisters, her 2 children Terri Jones (David) and Robert DeRider (Julie),  5 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

A family celebration of life will be held, and internment will be at the Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, S.D. later this year.

The family would like to thank Jean’s caregivers for the loving care she received in the final years of her life.
